I am on record on this site as being no fan of Bob, and I cringe at actually coming to his defense, however I do think it is unfair to heap all the blame for the withdrawal of SBD downloading on him. Phil has publicly stated that he was the one who initially brought the subject up and that he was not completely comfortable with the availability of the sbd's. Barlowe stated that the drummers were actually the driving force behind the debate and decision. Bob is in the forerfront because of his ill advised "See ya" and other remarks. i also don't believe that Bob's yea or nay is the sole deciding factor in this subject.

I believe this was an organizational decision, and that all four of the surviving members are culpable in this matter. Bob has become the focus of the debate because he, is not afraid to speak his mind and, as much as I believe he is mistaken and insensitive, I do applaud him for that.

"Phil has publicly stated that he was the one who initially brought the subject up and that he was not completely comfortable with the availability of the sbd's"

Phil has said on his site and in interviews that he did NOT agree with the sbd's taken off the site and had nothing to do with it

This is what Phil says,

"Personally, I love archive.org, and I would be perfectly OK with the soundboards being up there — but I’m just one guy."

But what has he done about it?

Phil gets to keep his fan base plus collect on his share of proceeds from marketing the sbds, which is now apparently a lot less than hoped for, but still a win-win situation.

As much as i want to believe otherwise, all we have seen is talk and excuses.

Could it be Phil is just a lot smarter than Bob?

I hate to pipe in on this, but I will (again!). Midnight Sun is exactly right, in my view (and I said it before too). All Phil has ever said is essentially "I didn't do it", and left it at that. For whatever it is worth, he has done nothing here except lamely point a finger at others or at least try to redirect fingers away from himself. I personally feel that there should be no fingers pointed. The boards are gone and that was their decision. As it turns out, a decision made to late, apparently as GDP is broke from what I hear. For better or worse, the world of the internet changed things. Boards were downloaded by the hundreds or thousands within days and without any sound degradation. This was not the same as meeting someone, getting contact info or sitting around and dubbing a cassette. It just wasn't. This acted in tandem with the essential end of the band which left only these boards (or golf shirts?) as their main source of income. What would you do if you had to compete with this? Phil is no different than the other guys, he just tries to make you think he is. Read what he has said, it's not much-really. We still have good auds in here, and that's pretty good. Again, Midnight Sun is right.

Phil eventually sold out too! Most of his new SBDs wiill be distributed by the Clear Channel gangsters and not the guys who released the Dead tours in 04...

"A lot of our business disagreements are the result of poor communication from advisors."

Everybody speaks, writes and understands the English language. Conference calls and internet group meeting are easily arranged. There is no need for an interpeter to screw everything up. How often do you communicate with your brother and sister and need a messenger boy to handle things?

pretty damn well said there purple. gotta agree with all of your points, although i still like raggin' on bob over the whole situation. but like you said, he is the easy target because he is really the only one who truly spoke his mind. wish he never made the "see ya" comment though - that one still hurts.
